The truffle season is just around the corner, which means the countdown to the JRM Black Truffle Dinner has official begun.
To get you in the mood, we thought we’d share our top ten truffle facts with you.
- Did you know that there are more than 100 types of truffles found in 12 countries around the world, with the French Black Truffle (Perigord) and the Italian White Truffle (Alba) being the most premium?
- Truffles grow in harmony with a host tree, enabling the tree to take in phosphorus and in return the truffle receives sugars enabling it to grow.
- The ancient Greeks believed that truffles were made when lightning hit damp soil.
- Pigs, trained dogs & goats are used to sniff out truffles. Originally pigs were thought to be the best ‘truffle sniffers’ because truffles produce a chemical almost identical to a sex pheromone found in male pigs.
- It is believed that Truffles are mushrooms, which started growing underground to beat forest fires, drought & severe cold.
- Truffles are a fabled aphrodisiac and in the middle ages, monks were banned from eating truffles for fear that they would forget their calling.
- Many truffle oils and salts are made with chemicals and not actual truffles.
- France is the world’s largest producer of truffles, harvesting up to 30 tons annually.
- Until 1930, there was only one Royal warrant to hunt for truffles in the UK which was given to the Collins family of Wiltshire. Thankfully this changed enabling anyone to become a truffle hunter.
- In 2004 a rare Italian White Truffle sold for over $50,000 at a charity auction.
